Living and working in clay in Davis, California, you can't help brushing up against the work Robert Arneson, legendary ceramic artist and educator who founded the famous TB-9 studio at the University of California, Davis, and taught for many years at UCD. Though Bob is long gone, his work is still shown in galleries in town, his gigantic egghead sculptures serve as landmarks on campus, and is old home is just a few blocks away from mine. Although I never had the privilege of knowing Bob (when we moved to Davis he had already retired from UCD and passed away shortly after), I went through a Bob-obsessed phase. A few years back, I was very honored to be asked to participate in a Tribute to Bob show. These "clay cartoons" are my personal tribute to Bob, playing with his own egghead sculpture designs and his penchant for comical self portraits in clay. I had so much fun creating them and giving them goofy titles!
