Series Description:
Ruth Bader Ginsburg (March 15, 1933 to September 18, 2020) was only the second woman to sit on the U.S. Supreme Court (after Sandra Day O’Connor). She was a trail-blazing feminist who during a career that included 27 years on the nation’s highest court, argued for equal protections for women under the nation’s laws, while simultaneously setting a high bar for court fashion. Her collars were an important feature of her Supreme Court dress, introducing individuality and feminine flair to staid judge’s robes court and often encoding subtle and timely messages in the collars she chose to wear. Her collection of collars continued to grow as colleagues and admirers brought them to her as gifts, right up until the month before her death.
Regarding the origin of her unique collars, RBG told the Washington Post in 2009: “The standard robe is made for a man because it has a place for the shirt to show, and the tie.” According to RBG, she and Sandra Day O’Connor “thought it would be appropriate if we included as part of our robe something typical of a woman.” O’Connor also chose to wear a lace collar on the court, but never reached RBG’s heights of fashion iconography.
This set of decorative and functional plates are my tribute – my valentines – to RBG’s moral probity and fashion playfulness. A reminder from one of America’s greatest pioneering women to women everywhere that we can be strong, serious, AND stylish. I use porcelain clay and a potter’s wheel to form the plates, coat them with a layer of black underglaze and then carve into them, using various wax resist techniques to get color inlays in some of the plates. I conserve energy and resources to the degree possible in my work and covid-safe procedures in packaging and delivering my ceramics. All my ceramics are food-safe and can be heated in the oven and cleaned in the dishwasher, although they will likely last longer hand-washed.
